The UK’S fastest growing load bank specialist, Crestchic Limited, has successfully provisioned a 6.8MVA test on a new semisubmersible heavy transport vessel that is being commissioned at Malta’s dry docks.
The load requirement saw Crestchic transport two 6MVA load banks, one 5.8MVA and one 2.9MVA Transformers operating a 6.6kV 60Hz, 3 phase system.
“We were contracted to supply load bank equipment for the testing of three new Wartsila type 32 generators for the newly refurbished heavy lifting vessel, the Fairmont Fjord,” said Jo Price, Rental Manager at Crestchic Limited.
“Our solution, which was based on site for an eight week period, was set up to test the three new 3,690kW generators using both low and medium voltage cabling. The load banks achieved resistive and resistive reactive at 0.8pf and stepped load increments up and down 1kW/1kVA, allowing for incredibly accurate application and rejection of load.
“The vessel, which was originally a barge, was being converted by its owners, Fairmont Heavy Transport N. V, to re-enter service as a platform- lifting vessel.”

Load banks are primarily used for testing electrical power output on diesel generators, gas turbines and UPS systems whilst carrying out commissioning and maintenance work.
